    Night Watch: Gloucester Harbor

I have been wandering Gloucester Harbor at night amid the fishermen’s fading footprints, taking color photographs with light from the ships, docks and waterfront buildings. I am thrilled by the beauty of this place! I am exhilarated by the shadows, colors, textures and shapes! I am humbled by the sheer weight and size and physicality of what I see and by the unmistakable, overwhelming presence of time. But I am also apprehensive and sad, wondering; how long before all this wood, all this metal, all the bits and pieces of these wharves – and the world they inhabit and sustain – completely disappears?
